Special Corner

Do you have a special corner in your home?

You know – a little spot that makes you smile when you see it? Maybe you’ve taken special care to decorate it exactly the way you want it to be.

It could be the cozy place where you curl up to read, or the sun porch where you have your morning coffee. For me, it’s a corner of our dining area that’s filled with things I love – art, dolls, and a bone china tea set.

But the thing I love most about this corner is the tea cart.

It originally belonged to my great-grandaunt (my grandfather’s aunt). I love the fact that this little piece of furniture was used by a family member many decades ago. It represents the connection between generations – the circle of life. I treasure it almost more than anything else I own.

And of course, it’s wonderful that it fits right in with my passion for collecting teacups!

The rest of our house could definitely use some re-decorating, but this little oasis is still a breath of fresh air for me. 🙂

My turn to answer!

It occurs to me that you may be wondering how I would answer some of the questions I’ve been asking all of you on the “Giveaway” posts! 🙂

Here’s my reply for . . .

“Describe your favorite teacher.”

teacher

I was very fortunate to have several great teachers (Some were nuns!), but my favorite was an English teacher during my sophomore year in high school when I was 15 years old. She was the classic prim and proper lady schoolteacher. She dressed in matronly, out-of-style outfits – overly long skirts and drab-colored dresses. Her shoes were sensible (grandmotherly!) with shoelaces and thick, low heels. This was during the era of the mini skirt and go-go boots, so she seemed desperately out of place. She was probably only in her mid-30’s at the time. Even as a kid, I felt sympathy for the constant teasing that she took (behind her back of course) regarding her nerdy appearance.

However, Miss Dillon’s eyes actually gleamed whenever she read poetry, or passages from great literature. Her voice was almost breathless, as she encouraged us to see the beauty in a phrase or a paragraph that we were studying. Her enthusiasm was absolutely infectious!!

I do believe it was Miss Dillon who most influenced my taste in literature and my love for poetry. And she unknowingly opened my eyes to a very valuable life lesson. After taking her class, I never again judged anyone on appearance alone.

Christmas Ornaments Part 4

toys2

Here’s the 4th and final part in the series on handmade ornaments that my daughters and I have made over the years.

Category 4: Mixed Media

orn-mixed-media

There’s a real smorgasbord of styles and techniques in this group, including applique, embroidery, beading, plastic canvas, general crafts/glueing, and knitting! The icicle, candle, and lollipop were made by my girls when they were in grade school. The mini stocking – one of my favorites in this group – was knit on regular knitting needles, and then transferred to “tiny needles” made from round wooden toothpicks and beads! Notice the little red bird with a strand of the yarn in his beak.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this series as much as I have enjoyed presenting it. I encourage everyone to make a few Christmas ornaments each year. It’s amazing how quickly your collection will grow! There’s no need to make complicated designs. Simple is always beautiful. Before you know it, you’ll have a “family heirloom” kind of tree!

In case you missed the earlier parts of the series, here’s a quick photo recap . . .

Ode to Autumn

Here in New England, overnight temperatures are in the 20’s this week.

Now, that’s chilly!

Autumn is my favorite season. On this frosty morning, it occurs to me that time is running out – winter is about to take over.

So before we are immersed in snowflakes and Santas, here’s a little photo tribute to one of the loveliest times of the year.
