We just had to have it!

My husband and I love art, antiques, and museums of all kinds. When you add to that our love for a bargain, it can be a risky combination. Sometimes we end up with some rather unusual “treasures”. 😉

For example, a few years ago on our anniversary we were shopping at one of our favorite stores, HomeGoods. If you have one in your town, I probably don’t have to tell you that they carry some remarkable items – everything from 5-foot snowmen to artsy garden statuary to a life-sized knight in shining armor! Of course they also have lots of dishes, cookware, linens, and even a bit of furniture.

But as I was saying . . . It was our anniversary, and after lunch at a favorite restaurant, we stopped at HomeGoods because I needed some new glassware. We had already agreed that we would skip anniversary gifts for that year, but then had second thoughts and decided it would be festive to have new water goblets in honor of the occasion. We found some glasses we liked on sale and just as we started to stroll up to the cash register – we both stopped short and looked at each other with a raised eyebrow.

There he was!

C’mon, don’t laugh!!

He was only $24.00!!! And he is so beautifully made!!! Plus it was our anniversary! And we love art! Ok, ok, enough excuses. “King Tut” sits on top of a bookshelf in our living room and makes us grin every time we see him. 🙂

The Circle of Life

We live in a rural area and enjoy the variety of wildlife that we frequently see, but our favorite outdoor “friends” are the large snapping turtles that use our yard as their crossroad.

Each spring and autumn, we have a ringside seat to watch the turtles as they migrate between a small pond across the street to another one in our back yard.

They spend the winter with us and then travel back across the street for the summer.

We get such a kick out of seeing them slowly creep across our yard on their seasonal journey.

Snapping turtles are quite large and have a lifespan of at least 47 years.

With their prehistoric look, it’s easy to believe turtles have been around for over 200 million years and were roaming New England’s landscape even before the dinosaurs!

Hats Off!

For the most part, I would never want to trade places with the ladies of yesteryear . . .

fashionplatehats

I mean, c’mon, washing clothes on a scrub board, chamber pots, outhouses, and having the entire family share a tub of bath water – all of that sounds pretty tough!

The fashion from years ago does intrigue me, though, particularly the custom of wearing hats. How fun it must have been to glam up an ordinary day with one of these creations!!!

Of course, women do wear hats now, but usually they’re more utilitarian – to keep warm in winter and to keep sun away in summer. You don’t often see a lady today with a hat that is a fashionable part of her ensemble. (Cowgirls are the exception! 😉 )

When I was a kid, we always got a new hat – a fancy little hat – for Easter. They didn’t cost a fortune because they were considered a necessary purchase. I can still remember some of them with their pretty fabric flowers and satin ribbon streamers. Sundays in the spring were often filled with a colorful array of lovely hats on girls of all ages, from toddlers to great-grandmas!

As we all know, styles come and go and then they come back again. I’m looking forward to the day when wearing stylish hats will be the norm once more! 🙂

Giveaway – Violet Blossoms Pendant!

Welcome to the weekly giveaway!

As usual, great comments last week! 🙂

I’m always surprised by the variety of answers.

There were lots of great memories with the TV shows you mentioned, and maybe we should all swap household chores – so that we could avoid the ones we dislike the most! lol

This week’s giveaway is a fun and funky pendant with shades of lavender and swirls of raspberry-pink.

The focal point is a vintage West German Glass Teardrop bead, which is accented with Swarovski crystals. The pendant is suspended from an artisan-crafted sterling silver bail that should accommodate most chains in your collection. Or perhaps you’ll wear it on a leather or satin cord!

Measurements: approximately 2-1/4″ long – including the sterling silver bail.
