Friday Favorites

Welcome to Friday Favorites. For this week, I planned to have a quotation about children, but I couldn’t decide whether you’d prefer a funny one or a more serious one, so I decided to include both. Take your pick! šŸ™‚

The picture is a vintage trade card depicting two young ladies who are quite busy with laundry for their dolls!

“While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about.” ~ Angela Schwindt

“Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead ought to tell a child to go to bed.” ~ Robert Gallagher

šŸ™‚ Have a great weekend. See you Monday with the new questions!

Friday Favorites

This week’s Friday Favorites features an amazing photo called “The Snow Trekkers”.

It was taken in Switzerland and showcases Mother Nature in all of her majestic beauty!

This week’s Friday Favorites features a vintage “trade card”. These charming little pieces of the past were often used by stores and businesses in the late 1800’s as a way to advertise their products. People enjoyed collecting them during shopping trips and then pasting them into large scrapbooks – a popular pastime of that era. (For more info on vintage trade cards, click here).

As you can see, this card was from a coffee company. I just love it! Something about it reminds me of my sisters and me. I looked for a little poem or short verse to accompany the picture, but had no luck.

I’m no poet, as you’ll see, but I thought it would be fun to add a few lines anyway as a little shout-out to my sisters…

The Little Bakers

Today we’ll be baking – my sisters and me.
Lil Sue’s on her tiptoes – just so she can see!
I’m in my new apron for this cooking fest . . .
And Nancy’s on tabletop giving her best.
But “Mittens” is wondering if when it’s all done,
We’ll give him a morsel to join in the fun!

I know, I know! Weā€™re a week into the New Year already, so why am I showing something Christmassy for this weekā€™s Friday Favorites?

Well, just before I close the holiday posts, I thought you might like to see my favorite gift given this year!

This Christmas version of a money tree was lots of fun to put together for my Mum & Dad. Every year it becomes harder and harder to figure out what to give them. They have 6 grown kids buying gifts for them, so the good ideas are dwindling. They donā€™t need any more knick-knacks!

This year, I decided to give them money, but I wanted to do more than just put it in an envelope. Money trees are nothing new, but I thought a Christmas money tree might be fun and a little out of the ordinary.

I found this pretty tabletop tree with the idea that they could re-use it as a holiday decoration in the future. Itā€™s showy but doesnā€™t take up too much real estate when in storage!

We gathered an assortment of bills in different denominations, rolled each one, and tied them to the branches with gold curling ribbon. As you can see, a dollar coin with little green bows served as the tree topper! (Yep, that’s Lady Liberty holding her torch.)

For the final touch, I printed a small hangtag that read: ā€œSometimes money does grow on trees!ā€

Actually, I wanted to show this to you right after we put it together, but that might have spoiled the surprise for Mum & Dad ā€“ they’ve been known to stop by the blog now and then! šŸ˜‰

Friday Favorites

This week’s Friday Favorites has a blend of three of my favorite things – art, tea, and poetry!

“The Tea”, painted by artist Mary Cassatt, depicts two young ladies sharing the ritual of afternoon tea. It’s currently part of the collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. During an exhibition there, a couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to view the painting and the silver tea service that you see, which actually belonged to Cassatt!

And hereā€™s a sweet little poem that would be a great accompaniment to a tea-themed gift basket!

~A CUP OF TEA

When your day seems topsy turvey
And as stormy as can be
There’s nothing quite as tranquil
As a nice hot cup of tea

While you savor this ambrosia
Your problems fade away
Its warmth will bring you comfort
And brighten up your day

So take a private moment
There’s a calmness as you’ll see
All because you briefly stopped
To sip a cup of tea.
