Magazines and Dinosaurs

Before there were computers . . .

women depended on magazines as their go-to source for recipes, health advice, family issues, craft patterns, humor, and so much more.

And while there are still plenty of magazines out there, I have a feeling they’re much less relied upon now. The internet has brought so information to our fingertips – literally!

But I do remember how I loved to crack open a brand new “Woman’s Day” after a trip to the supermarket. Somehow, it seemed like a *reward* for putting away the groceries! 😉

Of course, I continue to buy craft magazines these days but, with a computer, my need for a “women’s magazine” has truly diminished.

That’s a good thing for two reasons:

    1. I’m saving money.

    2. It’s given me the chance to meet you!

Do you buy magazines? Which ones? 😀

  1. I don’t buy any magazines, with all the online articles I cannot keep up now. I can tailor my searches to what I’m looking for and I get multiple websites, something you cannot get with one magazine. I used to get Family Fun so I could plan events with my neice, but thats online now too.

I hope you took some time off for some fun while you took your break. I missed you and everyone else who comes to the blog everyday.

    Today’s celebrations include:
4/2 Baby Day (a day to celebrate babies)
4/2 Brothers and Sisters day (a day to celebrate siblings)
4/2 National Play Your Ukulele Day
4/2 National Truffles Day ( I have some Lindt leftover from Easter, sounds like a great celebration to me)

  2. Hi Kelly,
A little bit of fun – I worked on a couple of pieces of jewelry and also finished a crocheted item. More on those soon! 😉

Thank you for posting the “days” while I was gone,
and thanks for missing me, too! 😀

  3. Hi there
I rarely buy magazines. I used to get TV Guide, People, Redbook and Times (I think that was the name) But now I don’t get any. I don’t have time to read them and I can look the info up immediately. I tell myself I’m saving trees (and piles of magazines in my house)

  4. Of COURSE we missed you!!
I didn’t see a day in the list to celebrate, so I choose my own today…I’ll make it a Pray for Peace day.

I love magazines and buy far too many..quilting, quilting art, crochet, sewing and several of my favs in the Somerset line. I NEVER buy those woman’s mags anymore. At my age, I have found those articles highly repetitive and possibly rejuvenated and reprinted. But I love seeing new ideas in sewing and other crafty things. Want to sit down with a cup of coffee and look through a magazine. I want to take one with me to the Doctor/Dentist office. Have one with me when I have to wait for a long freight train. (We live by Conrail Yards and we are always waiting an extended length of time for trains to pass).
    Be Healthy and Be Happy
    xx, Carol

  5. I’m glad you are back, Crystal! Hope that you had a nice break.

I do get magazines, Real Simple and Good Housekeeping, Real Simple is my favortite, my friends & family know this so I get gift subscriptions. For Good Housekeeping, I got a certificate for a free subscription at the grocery store–I guess I purchased something??? I do like it, though. I get several parenting magazines, too, usually the same deal—free gift with purchase of diapers, etc. and there are a couple of skinny ones (I know one is called American Baby but can’t think of the other) that are free. I think they send them to everyone who has had a baby? Must get a list from the OB or hospital.
So, long story short, I have a pile of magazines that I need to go through all the time!

I do like getting magazines over reading online articles, call me old fashioned, but nothing beats relaxing with a magazine and a cup of coffee! (That’s why I have so many piled up, I have no time to do that now!)

We will be celebrating Baby Day and Sister Day around here! (If we don’t float away! It is raining again/still raining)

Oh yeah, we just started getting National Geographic, too! The whole family reads that one.

    Happy Monday!!

  6. Glad you are back. I bet you finished your Japanese flowers scarf. Can’t wait to see it. I want to make one.

I used to get lots of magazines. Too many!! I was a sucker for the kids going door-to-door selling subscriptions for their school/club, etc. But over the years didn’t renew them. Now I only receive two magazines. And both were gift subscriptions from two friends. Woman’s Day is one of them. It’s been around a while!! And also American Patchwork and Quilting. I frequently buy Beadwork and a few other jewelry magazines.

I get lots of free ones, too. AARP, auto industry (hubby retired from), diabetes related. And don’t forget catalogs. Fire Mountain Gems and Beads is so thick. It comes in handy on those long car rides drooling over beads. LOL!!

What do you guys do with the old outdated magazines? I feel guilty tossing them in the recycle bin on trash day.

  7. I wish, Donna! 😉
The flower shawl will take a while! During the past week I had a whole list of chore-type things to accomplish.
Luckily, I had a couple of evenings free to work on a short crochet project and some jewelry. I have to take photos of them.

  8. Hi Clenna,

“I tell myself I’m saving trees (and piles of magazines in my house.”

That’s a good way to look at it! 🙂

  9. I still love getting magazines in the mail. My favorite is Country Living. xoxo 🙂
