Friday Favorites

TGIF, kids! πŸ™‚

For today’s edition of Friday Favorites, I have a painting by another one of my favorite artists – John Singer Sargent.

The art critics of his day were particularly impressed with this piece. Just look at how elegantly he captured the lovely lady.

(Click photo twice for the full effect!)

Lady Agnew of Lochnaw
by John Singer Sargent, American painter, 1892-93
National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh
Oil on canvas, 49″ x 39″

Doesn’t she look calm and confident? A modern woman in a not so modern era . . .

Her face conveys the sense that she’s very bright – perhaps a fascinating conversationalist!

But there’s almost a glimmer of mischief in her eye, don’t you agree? πŸ˜‰

Notice how well Sargent depicts the fabrics of her dress, the upholstery on the chair, and the rich drapery behind her.

And you know me… I’m loving her jewelry, too!

This weekend, I hope you see something interesting, or fun, or both!

Maybe you’ll take a photo of it for Show and Tell Tuesday???

And remember Carol’s great suggestion: a picture of your refrigerator door. πŸ™‚

See you Monday!

Hugs,

  1. I love the chair in that painting. I’m a huge fan of antique furniture, and cast iron cookware too. She looks so elegant.
I will be working on our rental house this weekend. I’m going to paint the shed in the backyard. We are putting the final touches on the house this weekend and getting it ready to rent. Its in the area of St. Louis city known as “The Hill.” The Hill is famous for all its Italian restaurants and bakeries. The house is over 100 years old, but we gutted it, and now it looks brand new. I’m thrilled with the way it turned out
I will take a photo of the frig too this weekend.
    Today’s celebrations include:
3/25 National Day of Celebration of Greek & American Democracy
    3/25 Old New Year’s Day
    3/25 Pecan Day
    3/25 National Waffle Day

3/26 Make Up Your Own Holiday Day (I’m making mine Gourmet Mac & Cheese Day)
    Have a great weekend everyone!

  2. March 26 is already memorable in my house because its Laurie’s birthday.
On a sour note, I ordered a personalized gift for her from an Etsy shop and it is not here as was promised with not much communication between the seller and me but that’s another story.

The painting is beautiful and all the elements come together elegantly. The brocade fabric backdrop is perfect too. I especially love the dress she is wearing. You can almost feel it with your eyes.

Crissie, I AM sending you a pic of my frig and an explanation of SOME of the clutter on it.

Have a great weekend everyone. Lunch at Red Lob Saturday for Laur’s BD. Yay!
    xx, Carol

  3. Oh no Kelly – I want a pix of the house you’ve renovated. It sounds lovely.

I’m visiting a dear elderly friend today. She’s about 93 and a sweetie. She’s in a Nursing home here in Chattanooga. We’ll have lunch at the home and talk awhile. She’s very alert and still has her sense of humor.

The picture of the lady is awesome and I do think she has a twinkle in her eye. She’s like the Mona Lisa – you wonder what she is up to.

Hmmm – Pecan Day – maybe I’ll go to the mall and get a bag of sugared pecans.

  4. I do love her dress- it looks like she’s wearing cream! And the lavender ribbon to show off that corseted waist. Everyone should go back to wearing giant ribbons!:D

  5. Wow Kids!
You all have fun stuff going on! πŸ˜€

Kelly, your house sounds soooo wonderful!!!! What a huge project to renovate the entire thing! You and hubby must feel an incredible sense of accomplishment! πŸ™‚ And near Italian restaurants and bakeries? Just my cup of tea!!!
Fun list of days…. Who knew about old New Year’s Day?

    Oh Carol,
How aggravating that your specially-ordered gift didn’t show up. Grrr! Please wish Laurie a Happy Birthday from her Auntie Crystal and I know you’ll all enjoy your lunch on Saturday! BTW, I didn’t forget about your question of what’s on my fridge…. I will add the explanation to the upcoming “refrigerator” post! πŸ™‚

    Clenna!
Wish we were all on “vacay” with ya! πŸ™‚ It sounds as if you are having such a lovely time. Your friend must feel lucky to have you! We all do!

    Hey there, Cara!
I’ve been thinking of you! Yes on the giant ribbons!!!! πŸ˜€ When I was in high school, the fashion was to pull your hair back and tie it with a generous satin ribbon bow – sort of drapey with the streamers hanging a bit. My friends and I loved to go into the city to a button shop that had the most beautiful selection of satin ribbon in all colors. Even we poor teenagers could afford a yard of this and a yard of that. Good times! πŸ™‚

  6. Wait for me!! Always late to the party!!

I love her eyes in that painting. Is she trying to tell the painter something? I am going to seduce you and have you fall in love with me by the time this is finished. LOL!! Love it, Crystal. So real looking. Like a photo. Wonderful painter.

About Carol’s suggestion. I don’t have anything on the front doors of my refrigerator but hubby put a bunch of magnets on one side. Maybe I’ll take a photo of that.
