Friday Favorites – Signs of Spring!

8hotcrossbuns

When hot cross buns appear on the shelves of bakeries and grocery stores, it’s a sure sign of spring! I prefer that they be light on the candied citron and heavy on the raisins. Too much of the candied fruit can ruin a good thing! πŸ˜‰

daffodil It occurred to me that I’ve never actually baked hot cross buns myself. Out of curiosity I searched for a recipe and here’s one that sounds pretty good!

Seeing hot cross buns reminds me of the nursery rhyme of the same name. Originally a street vendor’s cry, it was eventually set to music. When my youngest daughter was learning to play the recorder, it was one of the early tunes she played. We’d often have quite a giggle during her practice sessions when, on the spur of the moment, we’d break into a very animated duet and belt out those lyrics, Ethel Merman-style! πŸ˜€

Friday Favorites

This week’s Friday Favorites features a glorious painting –

“Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose” by John Singer Sargent.

After the harsh winter that many of us have been through, I thought we might need a gentle reminder that the flowers will return eventually!

This painting of two young girls lighting lanterns in an English garden is considered by many to be Sargent’s masterpiece. His desire was to capture the garden at the end of the day, when the twilight made the flowers glow as if they were lit from within – much like the paper lanterns strewn among them.

Enjoy the weekend! See ya Monday with new questions! πŸ™‚

cooking This week’s Friday Favorites is a “recipe” with a comic twist! Hope it makes you smile! πŸ™‚

Almost the Recipe

I didn’t have potatoes,
so I substituted rice.
Didn’t have paprika,
so I used another spice.

I didn’t have tomato sauce,
so I used tomato paste.
A whole can, not a half can,
I don’t believe in waste.

My friend gave me the recipe;
she said you couldn’t beat it.
There must be something wrong with her,
I couldn’t even eat it.

In the few short months I’ve been doing this blog, you all have added so much! You’ve inspired me, made me laugh (even had me close to spitting tea on the monitor now and then!), but most of all you’ve touched my heart with your warm responses.

Welcome to Friday Favorites. For this week, I planned to have a quotation about children, but I couldn’t decide whether you’d prefer a funny one or a more serious one, so I decided to include both. Take your pick! πŸ™‚

The picture is a vintage trade card depicting two young ladies who are quite busy with laundry for their dolls!

“Anyone who thinks the art of conversation is dead ought to tell a child to go to bed.” ~ Robert Gallagher
