Send in the Clowns

makeupcompact1I will admit it . . .

I can’t resist those “gift with purchase” promotions at the makeup counters!

Whenever I catch a glimpse of a “free gift” display in the cosmetics department, I have very little trouble convincing myself that I really could use a new blush, or possibly skin freshener, or mascara, or . . . something! πŸ˜‰

As long as the products in the gift package are things you’d like to try, it really is a pretty good deal. Often, the assortment makes a good travel set, too! Rationalizing? Moi?

Not that I wear a lot of makeup these days, but occasionally I will “put on my face” (as my sweet Mom-in-law liked to say while winking at her grandkids! πŸ˜‰ )

To tell you the truth, it’s only been in the last few years that I’ve kind of eased up on wearing makeup every day. For a large part of my adult life, I used to feel naked without it – even on a trip to the grocery store! Then one day it hit me that as you get older – less is definitely better!

blush Which reminds me – have you ever noticed that some older women start to look as if they’re getting ready for a circus performance with the way they apply their makeup? I always thought it was comical, but now that I’m on the other side of 40 yrs. (OK 50), I’ve had an epiphany – the poor dears couldn’t help it! Eventually your eyesight isn’t as good. It’s not that ladies are deliberately trying to put red dots on their cheeks – it’s just that they can’t see the blush that well, and need more and more for it to show up in the mirror! Live and learn. πŸ˜‰

lipstick Lately, I mostly go with a swipe of lipstick, and a little blush . . . oh and earrings!!! Can’t leave the house without earrings!

How about you? No makeup? Full makeup? Earrings?

  1. I was that way with Clinique. I never saw a free with purchase I didn’t have to have. I only stopped after they started piling up and not being used.

I feel the same way about earrings. I am naked without them. I even sleep in them. I wear light lipstick and a slight smear of eyeliner. Nothing else. I feel no shame dashing out to buy bread with a naked face, but NEVER naked ears!! πŸ˜€

  2. I am really chuckling at this post!! You have definitly offended many here! As you went along you just dug in deeper. But NOT ME. I always have said that when I get old, I am going to be one of those “fasionable” old ladies you see with lots of make up and big gaudy jewelry! Of course I will be wearing earrings because I can’t leave home without them. Big earrings that don’t get lost in my long hair, and especially big when my hair is up.

Forget the free with purchase stuff. I learned a long time ago that what they usually offer is not any color I care to use.

I have certain brands I use for certain items and I don’t change much.
I love Bare Minerals Foundation. Blush is open as long as it’s some type of bronzer. Lipstick must be long lasting..currently Cover Girl Stain. I also like Covergirl eyeshadow or The Body Shop is BETTER! The older I get, the more I use because I look so pale. So, I am gracefully becoming a “fasionable old lady”.

  3. Oh yes, don_mae!

    NEVER naked ears!

I remember a time when one of my earrings broke, shortly after I went out for the day. It wasn’t something I could fix on the spot – it would need to be soldered. So, of course, I had to then take off the other earring – which left me earring-less! It was so disconcerting and for the rest of the day I definitely felt that “something” was missing.

I remember thinking at the time, that I should keep a “spare pair” in my purse for just such an emergency!

I haven’t actually done that, but ya know the more I think about it -it might really be a good idea! lol πŸ™‚

  4. Your post really made me laugh…and relate to it completely! Especially the part about the eyesight! I finally had to break down and buy a magnifying mirror when I was told by my daughter that my makeup was less than acceptable!!
Fortunately, I’m not usually tempted to buy make-up for the free trials because the colors never seem to fit me. However, I do admit to using the same exact lipstick for the past 7 years that came as a freebie with a Clinique purchase! It’s the only color that I really love…and it was free!

  5. Carol,

Somehow I can’t ever imagine you wearing gobs of bright blue eyeshadow and fire engine red lipstick – which is what I was talking about when I mentioned the little old ladies with polka dot cheeks!

I’ll always wear some makeup. I’ve just decided to keep it simple on the “ordinary” days. I seem to need the magnifying mirror more and more lately, so I’ve given the family strict instructions to tell me immediately if I’ve overdone it and I start looking as if a little kid put on my blush! πŸ˜‰

  6. Karen,

I love Clinique lipstick too. I’ve also worn it for several years!!

I don’t think the one I wear was a freebie, but I think it was what I bought to get the freebie set they were offering at the time! πŸ™‚

I’m with you on the magnifying mirror!!! I have one at home, and I use a small one for travel.

I bought the travel one after a trip several years ago. We were staying at a hotel and I had a heck of a time getting my eye makeup on with the wall mirror, there!
