Throwback Thursday

3pumpkinsFallGreetings Kids!

You know how it is when you’re searching for something on the internet . . .

Suddenly, you bump into all kinds of cool things you weren’t even looking for!

Recently, I found a whole bunch of fun vintage items that really had me reminiscing. I decided to save them and will show you a few, every now and then, in a new feature I’m calling: Throwback Thursday. πŸ™‚

Please feel free to send me a photo of something nostalgic from your life experience! I’d love to show it in a future post!

Before the jumpy stimulation of “Angry Birds”, there was the quiet relaxation of Colorforms! These little plastic shapes could be infinitely repositioned for hours of imaginative play.

If your own home didn’t have a bed adorned with a chenille bedspread
– chances are that Grandma’s did!

Ladies, everywhere, wanted this rather awkward piece of equipment to dry their hair. You slipped on the “hat”, attached the hose, and voila – a hair salon in your own home! The loud hum made it difficult to take a phone call or watch TV, however.

I can NOT believe I ever wore this handy dandy, easy to fold-up and stash in your purse – rain bonnet! I definitely did, though, and why not!?! Who would want wet hair after all that time and trouble with the hair dryer? πŸ˜‰

‘Til next time . . .

  1. You know, there are probably a few of your readers that never saw any of these before and are probably getting a good laugh from this post. Colorforms were almost as fun as paper dolls, weren’t they.

I never had a Chenille bedspread, but I did buy one at a garage sale back in the 80s. My daughter wanted me to make a robe for her from it and back then you COULD NOT buy chenille by the yard. Of course, you COULD make your own, remember that?

I think that’s the same model hair dryer I had. I think I just got rid of it about 10 years ago, after it sat unused on the shelf for about 20 years. No, I am NOT a hoarder. I just stored it up high and you know, out of sight, out of mind.

I don’t think I ever used a rain hat. I think I have always loved umbrellas. Actually, I love umbrellas.

Wonder what you will come up with next. You always bring fond memories.
Have a great weekend. Your favorite weather is finally here!
    xx, Carol

  2. I still have the dryer in my attic!! Yes my grandmother had a Chenille bedspread. Mom wore the rain bonnet, always had one in her purse! And I loved the colorforms for my kids but even better was when I played with paper doll cut outs!

  3. Hi Carol,
I DO remember making a chenille-like table runner. It was called “candlewick” embroidery, I think. We stretched fabric in a large hoop, then used heavy thread to do a series of stitches – mostly french knots. Gosh, I forgot all about that! πŸ™‚ xo

P.S. The weather has been beautiful… and we’re just starting to see some amazing foliage!

  4. Happy Thursday, Clenna!
I still laugh about the rain bonnets. The girls in my school all had them. Even as pre-teens, we never wanted to be caught with ruined hairdos! I remember we had to shake the thing out in order to put it away. Heaven help anyone who was close by! The folds of the bonnet held a lot of rain and an unsuspecting person could inadvertently become pretty soaked. πŸ™‚ xo

  5. I had some of those rain bonnets too and they certainly did soak anyone within standing distance when you shook them out!!! So funny to remember these items. I had one of those hair dryers too and later adapted it to be a blow dryer by not attaching the cap and using a brush with the hot air coming out of the hose. I thought I was the cat’s meow!!

  6. Welcome, Laurel πŸ™‚
How very clever of you to come up with the idea of turning your old hair dryer into a blow dryer!
    Now that is recycling! xo

  7. I love this type of post Crystal!!! They stir up all sorts of warm and fuzzy memories. I used to love playing with Colorforms…do they even make them anymore? That bedspread is gorgeous! We had some chenille bedspreads as kids, but none as pretty as that one. I never used a rain hat, always a rain coat or jacket with a big hood and a pretty umbrella. xoxo πŸ™‚

  8. How do I get 5 of those rain bonnets. They will be a perfect gift for friends meeting in Seattle.

  9. Hi Ruth πŸ™‚
The rain bonnet you see in my blog post is from a vintage advertisement….
I’m not sure that exact style would still available anywhere today, but I did a quick google search and found one that might be a good substitute . . .
