Lucky Seven – Signs of Spring

When Spring begins, it often seems as if Mother Nature is toying with us . . .

One weekend it’s sunny and gorgeous with temperatures in the 70’s. Then, suddenly, the temperatures drop to the 40’s, with biting winds and flooding rains. No coat is needed one day; a hat and mittens are required the next! It’s enough to make you feel like a yo-yo.

What can we do to cope with such trauma? Well, we could console ourselves by searching for “Signs of Spring”! 🙂

This week’s Lucky Seven includes some of my favorites. Please add yours, too!

7 Sights, Scents, Sounds, and Signs of Spring:

1. Windows that are open and the scent of spring flowers wafting through the house.

2. The sound of the spring peepers! These tiny little frogs have an uncanny ability to begin their chorus on the first day of spring!

3. Pussy willows and forsythia

4. Packing away the heavy coats for “sweater weather”!

5. Birds chirping merrily at sunrise.

6. Easter lilies and jelly beans at the supermarket

7. Finally, the most comical sign that spring has sprung is that guy who seems to be at every shopping mall on the first mild day. He’s very easy to spot! While most of us have left our coats at home, this guy is sporting short-shorts, a tank top and flip-flops. We always giggle a little, and conclude that he has that outfit waiting by the door, to slip into the moment the temperature hits 60 degrees! We always wonder what he’ll do on a day that’s 95!

Lucky Seven – Signs of Spring — 9 Comments

  1. The day I can ride my Harley. It feels so good to have the wind in my face and the sun on my back.
I also love it when the woods start to green up.
The birds return, and so do the lady bugs and butterflies.
There are ducks on the pond at school and the tree frogs sing at night.
I guess I’m the female version of the guy at the grocery store. It was 60 degrees out today and I had my flip flops, t-shirt and capris on.
Maybe I can tolerate a weather that is a little chilly because I don’t wear a winter coat unless I’m actually going to be outside.

  2. What makes me think spring is the cool breeze that just wants to make you stand and feel it on your face and through your hair. And when it is 6pm and it is still nice outside, now that is spring for me!

  3. My birdies are stuffing the houses making nests! The squirrels are gathering bits of leaves and debri carrying them up the trees making theirs. I’m stuck at the window again, watching the wonders of nature.

    xx, Carol

  4. Signs of spring that just mean “it’s here!” to me:

    Dandelions starring the dead grass

Rooting through my beads for the pastels and brights

Chukk-chukk-chukk sound of automatic sprinklers in the neighbors’ yards

Squirrels and bluejays arguing in the big tree outside

I wish I could hear one of your spring peepers! They sound so cute! I love lil’ frogs and even toads!

  5. The fragrant hyacinths, darling crocuses and the yellow jonquils that renew my belief in life! My children wanting to wear shorts and tee shirts the first day it is warm and the next day, it is 40*. Thanks, Cindi

  6. The smell of something I’m told is some sort of laurel- purple flowers, have kind of a grape-soda smell.

The color of the light. Spring light is almost clear, after all the blue-light of winter and the gold tones of fall sun.

Fruit looks really tasty again! Oh sure, it’s available year round, but I don’t feel like tucking into cold berries mid-January, do you?

Wind! I don’t know, winter is cold but except for a few storms the air is just kinda there. In spring the winds blow nonstop, like a broom sweeping out the nasty cold air!

My entire wardrobe, out all over the house. Like you said, the weather ping-pongs so much..! I love it when April settles in and I can finally pack away my heavy clothes for another seven months.

And of course, the number one spring herald for any Texan is the arrival of the bluebonnets, so shortly sweet before the summer heat burns all the non-gold flowers out of the fields. And they’re out now! Hurrah!

  7. When we open our windows and that springy air fills the house! also when I start sneezing!! ugg allergies! 😉

    xo

  8. I love to see the baby geese trailing behind their parents like little yellow puff balls! That’s a sure sign of spring! xoxo
